The Breaking Point: Tyler Perry’s “Straw”

In “Straw,” Tyler Perry once again focuses on the often-overlooked struggles of ordinary people, presenting a powerful psychological crime drama for 2025. Starring Taraji P. Henson, this Netflix production is less a traditional thriller and more a stark social commentary, exploring themes of resilience, systemic injustice, and the dangerous consequences that arise when an individual’s back is truly against the wall.

“Straw” (2025) was released on June 6, 2025.

You can watch “Straw” exclusively on Netflix. It was distributed globally by Netflix, so it’s available for streaming on the platform if you have a subscription.

“Straw” (2025) follows the relentless and tragic unraveling of Janiyah Wiltkinson (Taraji P. Henson), a struggling single mother who is pushed to her absolute breaking point. The film meticulously chronicles what seems to be the worst day of her life.

Janiyah lives in a dilapidated apartment with her frequently ill daughter, Aria (Gabby Jackson), whose medical expenses add to their already dire financial situation. The initial chain of misfortunes includes: Receiving an eviction notice from her landlord, Learning that Aria is being picked on at school because she can’t afford lunch, Being fired from her grocery store job,  A frantic trip to the bank to withdraw money for Aria’s lunch proves futile due to long lines, Encountering a corrupt off-duty police officer who harasses her, runs her off the road, and has her car impounded due to expired documents, Returning home to find her belongings thrown out of her apartment due to the eviction.

This movie directed by Tyler Perry, he holds multiple hats for “Straw,” serving as the director, writer, and producer. Perry is known for his prolific output and for telling stories that often centre on themes of faith, family, forgiveness, and the struggles of African American women. While he is widely recognized for his comedic “Madea” character films, he also frequently delves into serious dramas and thrillers, often with a focus on psychological or social issues.
